Prosecuting Attorney Everden issues opinion on whether Arcada Township residents may vote in April on adopting the county road system without first abolishing the township system. He notes Arcada has built roads and raised funds under the township framework for years and considers the legality of electors voting the county question at the spring election.
A reader debates whether township electors can shift to a county road system while retaining township highway duties and whether one township can force countywide changes. The discussion questions if voting on adopting a county system ends township authority, emphasizing that the ballot must clearly address abolishing the township system and that indirect action is unlikely to succeed.
The west wall of the brick Sumner schoolhouse collapsed from roof to second floor last Friday just before noon. About twenty pupils in the upper room under Principal H L Marvin rushed outside as the building tumbled. The dismissal a few minutes early had been a lighthearted gesture. No one was hurt. Years ago J F Tucker warned the building unsafe. A Saginaw expert declared it safe and charged the district $30 for the assessment. The matter continued unresolved.
A shortened intermission saved several children as debris crushed the four rows nearest the wall. Lois Evey Pearl Lang Frank Hicks James Lang Merle Forquer Walter Eavey and Principal Marvin leapt to corners to survive. Miss Alice Seaman led 45 children in the room below as cracks warned of danger and the old schoolhouse faces demolition plans.
Henry Soule was the low bidder at two thousand dollars for the Post cemetery vault but bids were rejected and new bids ordered for April 1 at 7 30 p.m. The council also audited city books, noting two outstanding orders totaling 92 01, and approved a balance report praising the clerk and treasurer.
The Masonic Minstrel season 2015 closed with huge attendances Tuesday and Wednesday. Performers included Thatcher Primrose & West names, Rowland, Chick, Wright, Pringle, Gardner, and Moore. Highlights featured Buck, wing dancing by Bones and Tamb, and scenes from Old Kentucky Home with strong ensemble acting. The event supported the temple building fund of F. & A. M. No. 244 in Alma.
A political gathering titled Democrat Gomenk occurred Friday evening at City Hall drawing local residents and party members. Organizers announced plans for upcoming campaigns and policy forums, with attendance noted by city officials.
The DeWitt convention convened Friday with Work Bahkte as chair. DeWitt Vought and Grovere were named to lead as secretary and cashier. Ward tickets selected include First Ward: J N Baker, C HL Jes, I Hasbrook. Second Ward: Isaac Russell, W W Caple, J Morrison. Third Ward: John Sullivan, Ben Carter, Azra Robinson. Fourth Ward: J D Helman, E C Lake, G Greenhoe. Crandall initially declined mayoral bid, then received 27 of 38 ballots and was declared unanimous nominee. Clerk seat left vacant. F O Grover named treasurer. Albert Mann named Justice of the Peace. City committee named: P Wil Creaser, George Gargett, Benton Carter, DeWitt Vought.
Saad sells all stock to G. B. Hicok Sr. and G. B. Hicok Jr. who will operate the Redman block business as G. B. Hicok & Son. The new firm invites continued patronage and vows to satisfy both old and new customers.
N Fe Saad thanks the public and regular customers after selling his grocery business to G B Hicok and Son. He expresses gratitude for patronage that enabled growth and hopes for cordial relations should he reenter mercantile work in the future.
A group of business owners agree to close on Tuesdays Thursdays and Fridays from April 1 at 6 00 pm with Thanksgiving and Christmas exempted. Signatories include Mrs Sylvia Giffney D W Robinson N B Waterman and others across local shops. Alma night school closed for the 1918 season on Thursday evening.

Ray Kent a Marion grain buyer attended the Bean Jobbers meeting at the Wright House on Tuesday afternoon. He said the session was mainly an experience exchange where buyers shared handling methods for the wet 1912 crop and aimed to establish a fair market and equitable returns for farmers.
Michigan bill introduces arc to authorize Arcada township board to shift 1200 dollars from the building fund to the highway fund pending a majority vote by qualified Arcada electors. Representive Newell Smith introduced the measure on February 28 with committee review and general orders on March 7.
Last Thursday the Progressive party met at City Hall to adopt resolutions and nominate a city ticket. Otto Sanderhoff headed the ticket with J P Losey as chair, Homer Dunham secretary, and officers sworn in by Gov Cork. Ward tickets named for supervisors aldermen and constables with Otto Sanderhoff as mayor and L C Wright clerk among city officers.
John Greig died at his home Tuesday afternoon after a long winter illness from pneumonia. A longtime Alma resident of about twenty five years he served as Street Water and Weed Commissioner. He was a faithful city official and a member of Meyer Post G A R. Funeral at 2 p m Friday at the Methodist church with the Post attending in a body.
Monday evening at the local high school oratorical contest Lee Sharrar declaimed on War and Nelda Dove spoke on the Death of Nathan Hale. Stanley Stoddard presented A Message to Garcia and won first place, with Paul Cash receiving an ovation for Napoleon Bonaparte. The Boys Glee Club complemented the program.
John McNichol has recovered and returned to his home in North Star. Dan Wood is improving rapidly. Nurse Parker spent weekend with relatives in Saginaw. Mrs. Varnum of Winn is on the gain. Miss Ethel Bandfield, nurse from Mecosta, returned Monday from a visit home.
W J McDonald will address the public on Monday evening March 31 at the Realty Opera House. Admission is free. He promises a forceful logical talk while political committees organize. F Brown was on the sick list today. Bring friends.
