Taos Pueblo Housing breaks ground on new offices

Taos Pueblo Housing marked a June 4 groundbreaking for a 2,200 square foot headquarters to replace two trailers. The project, funded by a $576,778 Native American Housing Block Grant via ARRA, will provide up to six offices and a crew room.

Town installs new time clocks for municipal workers

On June 14 town employees will clock in by palm scan and keypad code. Nine old keypads and 14 years of system use are replaced with $12,600 in high tech scanners and networking software. The system sends time data directly to payroll and includes double checks to prevent unfounded multiple logins. Town Manager Daniel Miera says the upgrade improves efficiency and accountability. IT manager Reuben Martinez notes training across departments and initial handprint scans. installation is set for June 11.

Denish outlines jobs and education focus in Taos stop

Gubernatorial candidate Diane Denish told Taos supporters she would prioritize new jobs and public education if elected. She said she would review the Taos Municipal School Board, pursue a statewide water rights adjudication, support small businesses with tax credits and capital access, and challenge her opponent Susana Martinez. She warned against Swift Boat tactics and framed herself as a fighter for Northern New Mexico issues.

Third annual acequia conference at Mission Embudo

Advocates for acequias in New Mexico convene at Mission Embudo this weekend for lectures workshops and discussions sponsored by the Arid Lands Institute. The event opens Friday June 11 at 7 p m with Jack Loeffler on Thinking Like a Watershed followed by Genetic Chile. Saturday features Estevan Lopez Arnie Valdez Sylvia Rodriguez and Gary Nabhan with awards at dinner. Sunday moves to Embudo Valley Community Center for arroyo restoration talk. event is free. Taos County Historical Society Hosts Field Trip

The Taos County Historical Society invites a field trip to Turley Mill archeological dig in upper Arroyo Hondo Valdez area this Saturday June 12. Meet at the Bureau of Land Management parking lot on Cruz Alta at 10 a.m. for car pooling. Alberto Gonzales of Southern Methodist University Dallas will report on excavations. Elderly Taos Woman Describes Possible Sexual Assault

An 88 year old Taos woman may have been victimized by a middle aged man who courted her in Kit Carson Park and followed her home. Neighbors saw the man stay about two hours before her friend intervened. Police are investigating as a criminal sexual contact case.
