Taos High School seniors await diplomas as commencement began Saturday under windy skies at Anaya Field. Their class along with Questa High School and Pefiasco High School completed graduation requirements May 27 and 28, with more photographs on page Ag.
Juan Aragon longtime Taos schools superintendent announces retirement effective June 30 after 33 years in teaching and administration. He plans to relocate to Arizona with his wife Mary Frances. Board forms search committee to review applications from western states and select six finalists for interviews.
On June 1 negotiations between Holy Cross Hospital management and 1199 New Mexico union members were at a critical point. A strike vote was possible for Friday June 2, though officials said talks were initially going well. Details on discussion topics remain undisclosed.
Taos Town Council approves a $44,000 contract with Camp Dresser and McKee to study Taos County Regional Landfill, including 20 year cost analyses for five sites, site options, trash composition, public meetings, and a final site decision. The project runs through 1997 amid FAA spacing concerns and a potential transfer station option.
A 17 year old Questa High School sophomore admitted setting a fire in the upstairs janitor’s closet on May 18. He was detained without bond as authorities anticipate more arrests linked to the blaze.
The 1995 Questa High School graduates marked final events with a real fire drill on May 18 and a fantasy Senior Night on May 26. The gym featured blue teal and purple lights, fog, castle turrets, spotlights, a large screen playing a music video mix, and a special video by librarian Sally Lucero.
In memory veterans Ben Garcia of Albuquerque and Leeroy Lucero of Los Lunas gather at the Disabled American Veterans Memorial in Angel Fire for a candlelight ceremony. About 11,000 attended over the weekend, weather factors cited for lower turnout than years with up to 20,000. Music by local artists and a speech by Dr. Victor Westphail honored POWs and MIAs.
