A pair of low pressure centers brings clouds and a chance of showers tonight and tomorrow. Lows near 45 to 50 tonight with highs in the upper 60s tomorrow. The Sunday to Tuesday outlook calls for continued cool temperatures with showers likely Sunday and partly cloudy Monday, then fair Tuesday.
On the eve of Solidarity Day, AFL-CIO organizers expect about 200000 people to join the mass march on the U S Capitol, doubling earlier forecasts. John Perkins, Solidarity Day project director, had estimated around 100000 participants for the event.
The Syracuse Herald-American spotlights Rev. Frank R. Haig 8 J as Le Moyne College president and brother of the U S secretary of state, profiles a cheese maker in Utica and details SU cheerleaders practice grind. Also notes lottery numbers 667 and 065 and a golf joke.
A Senate resolution opposing the Saudi AWACS deal with five planes and an arms package appears likely to derail the administration. Haig failed to sway committee votes as 51 senators signaled opposition, with 19 Republicans among them. House support also tops the needed threshold, complicating Reagan's eight month honeymoon and any potential package revisions.
House GOP leaders say Reagan's plan to delay cost of living increases and cut social programs will pass in the House. The package would trim $13 to $16 billion for FY 1982, end revenue sharing, cut nondefense programs by 10 percent, abolish Energy and Education Departments, and phase out 75,000 federal jobs. A national address next week is expected to outline the strategy to attach the changes to a borrowing authority bill.
The Soviet Union demanded immediate drastic measures against Solidarity accusing the union of anti Soviet propaganda aimed at liquidating communism in Poland. Poland warned Solidarity that continued agitation risked independence and possible Soviet troop action.
A dozen Polish students armed with Molotov cocktails hijacked a LOT airlines plane with 37 others aboard and forced it to fly to U S air base in Tempelhof, Berlin. A Soviet or East German jet pursued the craft but withdrew as American helicopters escorted the flight to land. All 12 hijackers surrendered to U S authorities after landing. The incident follows two prior Polish airliner hijackings to West Berlin within two months.
