Ford Catholics meet to discuss abortion issue

President Ford met with Roman Catholic leaders to state he is more sympathetic to their anti abortion views than Jimmy Carter while opposing a constitutional abortion ban. Nessen noted Ford favors a state by state approach rather than a nationwide amendment. Attending bishops and archbishops included Bernardin Carberry Cooke McGuire Malone and Kausch. The leaders again declined photos with Ford as they had with Carter in a prior meeting.

Carter shakes hands at Milwaukee plant

President Carter touring Wisconsin said unity is needed after polls show a tight race with Ford. He spoke at the Allis Chalmers tractor plant in Milwaukee and urged Democrats to stay united while forecasting cool, soggy weekend weather for Central New York and nearby regions.

Boycott Has Little Immediate Effect On South Side Schools

Jeanne Bednar ski reports a threatened SCRAMB boycott of three South Side elementary schools in Syracuse during the first full day of classes. McKinley Brighton showed 464 attending out of 483 pupils yesterday in grades four through six, with 19 absent today. Officials could not provide all figures but expect no sharp attendance drop. SCRAMB leaders claim at least 100 pupils may boycott, while parents form block schools to pursue district curriculum.

Defector Viktor Belenko Arrives in Los Angeles in Guarded Flight

Soviet air force pilot Viktor I. Belenko who defected to Japan landed in Los Angeles aboard a U S airliner. He was whisked away by officials and guided to a secure lounge before departure to Washington. Photos in Tokyo showed him with changed appearance and attire.

Cape Province rioting deepens as school burned and protests spread

In Cape Town area violence escalates with arson at Berg River high school in Wellington and tear gas used to disperse crowds in Bridgton. The attack follows a day after police killed at least 22 amid the nation’s worst antigovernment violence since June, with 327 deaths overall.
