New York Sets 177000 Deer Management Permits This Fall

New York will issue about 177000 deer management permits to hunters this season to curb overpopulation in forests and parks. State officials say overcrowding harms vegetation and increases vehicle hazards, with parks like Harriman showing signs of grazing and crop damage. DEC projects more than 400000 big game licenses, plus 177000 doe-focused permits in overcrowded zones, as deer survival has risen in mild winters. Friends of Animals opposes park hunts, arguing habitat manipulation and antiwildlife impacts, while a Suffolk County judge upheld the park hunting policy.
