New York judge Edward Greenfield dismissed a lawsuit by Brooke Shields and her mother over Playboy Press photos of Shields as a child. He allowed Garry Gross to market the images but barred pornographic publication, saying Mrs Shields is protective yet exploitative and cannot have it both ways.
A Manhattan federal court judge withdraws an earlier finding that CLA Director William J. Casey knowingly participated in Multipions Inc. investors say the 1968 circular misled, but Casey argues he was an outside director and not involved in drafting or negotiations. Until his management involvement is resolved, liability remains undetermined.
Albany AP reports Jonathan Altschuler of New York City was fined $1000 by the state lobbying commission for failing to file on time a 1961 lobbyist's Statement of registration for New Yorkers Against Casinos. The penalty was publicly announced yesterday by commission officials.
In New York AP report Marjorie Poole 35 was charged with homicide after allegedly stabbing her two sons Paris six and Christopher twelve. Paris died at the scene and Christopher remained in critical condition at Lincoln Hospital. An unidentified caller summoned help around 11 15 p m. Police say Christopher was found on a fire escape and believed to be attempting self harm. The younger boy was later found dead in the apartment. Poole told police she tried to kill them to stop authorities from taking them.
Leon Polsky, 30, a former Family Court judge and acting state Supreme Court justice, was named executive director of New York's Advisory Commission on Criminal Sanctions. The $50,000-a-year post was announced by Gov. Carey. The commission aims to reduce disparities in sentences for similar crimes. Polsky has served as attorney in charge of the Legal Aid Society's criminal defense division in New York City.
New York governor Hugh Carey signaled a veto of a Legislature approved bill allowing localities to continue underassessing property. He urged a statewide standard to avoid unfairness and spoke at a New York City Partnership lunch. Carey then addressed St Francis College Brooklyn about federal budget cuts impact on the state.
POUGHKEEPSIE AP reports 19 year old James Williams was charged with second degree murder after his infant son Terrance died following a beating. Police arrested Williams yesterday, two days after Terrance died.
State Sen. Fred Eckert told colleagues he expects to be named U.S. ambassador to the Fiji Islands, likely before year’s end. The Rochester-area Republican, noted for anti big government views, has ties to Reagan era diplomacy and previously sought New Zealand posting. William Bodde remains ambassador to Fiji Islands since July 1980.
Gov. Hugh Carey grants clemency to 23 year old inmate Dewayne Williams at Clinton prison for humanitarian reasons. Williams went blind from diabetes and suffers weakened muscles heart and kidneys. He is a permanent hospital patient at Dannemoda prison near the Canadian border and has served over 244 years of his sentence for a 1979 Oneida County robbery.
A 73 year old millionaire yachtsman Peter Richmond remains missing two days after his 50 foot trawler Magician was found anchored in 60 foot waters between Long Island and Connecticut. Neighbors saw him depart Stamford Marina Monday morning. Coast Guard searches paused pending further developments as Richmond’s family chartered a helicopter for aerial help. Richmond, longtime Manhattan corduroy heir and board member of Crompton Corp, had been living aboard for five years and planned to visit New York Yacht Club on November 2.
