ALBANY AN UPD News Today reports the 3500 prison bond issue recount shows 1,254,647 opposed to 1,250,213 in unofficial totals with two Oneida County districts still uncounted. NES cautions results not final until absentee ballots are tallied and state certification on December 15.

Alternatives bill drives New York prison bond debate

New York Assemblyman Melvin Miller backs a 500 million prison bond, proposing 3 million for alternative to incarceration programs if voters reject the bond. Latest counts show the bond trailing by 3444 votes though final totals aren’t in. Miller says prisons will still be built with state funds if needed.

Milk price fixing indicts 17 firms and 28 executives

Grand juries in Brooklyn and Queens charged 17 major milk distributors and 28 top executives with a 10 year conspiracy to fix prices in the New York metropolitan area. Attorney General Robert Abrams said price fixing was widespread and had cost consumers millions in overcharges since 1971, with the companies supplying half the milk sold locally.

Parents seek liver donor for gravely ill child Lauren Toohey

In New York, Joseph and Beatrice Toohey publicly appeal for a live donor liver for their 4 year old daughter Lauren, who suffers from cancer and is brain dead. Doctors say the organ must come from a young donor with blood type A or O, within three hours flight from Pittsburgh, with a six hour viability window.

Cuban boat people gang robs Yonkers appliance store

In Yonkers police say a six to ten member Cuban boat people gang held 12 customers and staff at gunpoint at Trader Horn Appliance, stealing about 100000 dollars in videotape machines televisions and washers since last summer. One suspect was detained for questioning and faces a lineup as investigators pursue witnesses. The group active in Westchester and the Bronx since early summer.

Man sentenced in mutilation attack in Buffalo

A 24 year old Buffalo man, found guilty after a two week trial, was sentenced to six to 18 years in prison for the mutilation and attempted murder of a 21 year old prostitute in a vacant lot last fall. The defendant proclaimed his innocence while the judge ordered psychiatric care during imprisonment.
