Escapee sought in Binghamton home shooting death

Police hunt Albert Kirkman after two shots fired through a home door killed his wife Evelyn Kirkman, 55, in Binghamton. Kirkman, a recent escapee from Binghamton Psychiatric Center, is being sought in connection with the Sunday night slaying.

NM to refund almost $3M to upstate gas customers

Niagara Mohawk Power Corp will issue nearly 3 million dollars in refunds to 423000 natural gas customers across upstate New York. About 1.8 million stems from Louisiana taxes ruled unconstitutional by the U.S. Supreme Court, with interest included. Earlier Septembers 3.4 million refund and 700000 from FERC approved refunds to Consolidated will be returned via Purchased Gas Adjustment over 12 months, totaling savings of about 4.05 for a 1550 therm yearly home and 1.05 for 400 therm users. An additional 450000 in Consolidated refunds will be passed along over six months from November to April, adding 80 cents and 18 cents respectively for eligible customers.

Shuttle fuels advance in readiness for third launch try

At Cape Canaveral technicians completed fueling two of three hydraulic system engines aboard the space shuttle Columbia. Engineers began refilling the third tank to provide two flight options on Thursday as weather remains the main potential delay. Astronauts Joe Engle and Richard Truly travel from Houston for the next launch attempt.

Bright Star 82 joint drills begin in Egypt with U S and Egyptian forces

UPI reports U S Army and Air Force units arrive in Egypt to train with Egyptian troops for Bright Star 82. About 850 paratroopers from the 82nd Airborne link with a mechanized ground force as B 52 bombers and AWACS may participate. The exercise involves Sudan Somalia and Oman with 6 000 American participants overall and runs through late November.

Reagan economic aide predicts spring upturn

New York based UPI reports Murray L. Weidenbaum, chairman of the President's Council of Economic Advisers, says the economy will stay in recession for several months but rebound sharply in spring 1983. He favors spending cuts over tax rises to trim the 1982 deficit and cites progress on inflation and interest rates as the economy waits for a second half revival driven by lower rates, tax cuts, and defense spending.
