Roger Ebert notes thinner crowds and weaker slate at Cannes while questioning the influence of cable TV and the American Film Market. He singles out Chariots of Fire and Heaven's Gate for debate, criticizes Heaven's Gate as a flawed film, and highlights Light Years Away and the directors Fortnight entries amid a broader sense of an uncertain festival future.
