The Alaska Statehood Commission, angered by federal oil and environmental policies, plans a study of secession costs and difficulties. It will examine armed forces costs, potential defense treaties, a currency system, postal service, and personnel needed to assume federal duties. The panel was created by a ballot measure approved by a slim November majority.
About 26 Cuban refugees at the Atlanta federal penitentiary are on a hunger strike to protest confinement. Thirteen dropped out yesterday after 13 quit the previous week. Prison spokesman William Noonan notes the fluctuating pace as inmates alternate between striking and withdrawing. The facility houses more than 1,700 Cuban refugees who say they were jailed in Cuba before fleeing aboard the Freedom Flotilla boatlift.

A 19 month old boy and his parents died in a fire on City Line Road in Oswego. John Phillips Sr 27 Jane Jacques 37 and their child John Phillips Jr were found dead on the second floor.
