Thousands of New York state prison guards lined the streets of Dannemora for the funeral of Danna A Payant the first woman guard killed on duty in the state. Gov Hugh Carey and Corrections Commissioner Thomas Coughlin attended as a 3500 guards paid respects with an honor guard and flag presented to her husband. The priest and husband spoke amid calm in the system while courts blocked a statewide lockdown for the day.
