Thousands attend funeral as NY prison system limits activities

Thousands of corrections officers traveled to Dannemora for the funeral of Donna Payant the first state prison guard killed on duty since 1971. State prisons operated on limited schedules with three facilities on lockdown while most inmates kept to work release and cafeterias.

Christopher cooperating in Buffalo shooting case

AP reports Joseph Christopher 25 year old Army private facing three killings in western New York is cooperating with a court ordered mental exam despite pledging not to communicate with a doctor. The Buffalo Evening News notes he was interviewed by a second psychiatrist at the Erie County Holding Center. The Erie County grand jury also heard from relatives and others tied to knife attacks on two black men, with Fort Benning official Col William Ward testifying. Christopher was extradited after being held at Fort Benning stockade on an attempted murder charge connected to a knife attack on a black soldier.

Bomb threat blitz reaches new high in New York

UPI reports a day of evacuations across Manhattan as bomb threats surged to 202 calls. Broadway’s 42nd Street audience, shoppers, and commuters fled to streets while police continued to investigate tips. No devices were found. two WWII artillery shells were recovered from the East River by the Brooklyn Bridge.

Abrams opposition cripples casino gambling

New York Attorney General Robert Abrams reversed his prior stance and spoke against legalized casino gambling in New York. He warned of higher crime, influence peddling, and government corruption, citing a six month probe and Atlantic City crime trends. Senate and Assembly leaders expressed doubt about passage before recess and questioned unity on eight proposed amendments. Carey hesitated, saying he would review Abrams statement before commenting further.
