Severe storms battered the Northwest with hail snow and rain causing travel hazards while heavy rains offered relief to drought and fire stricken Florida. A tornado hit southeast Florida with no injuries reported and flood watches covered parts of Montana Colorado and Yellowstone.
Gen. Harry H. Vaughan, 87, retired military adviser to President Truman and longtime aide, died yesterday at Fort Belvoir Virginia. Vaughan and Truman befriended in World War I, both artillery captains in the AEF in France. A Silver Star with Oak Leaf Cluster and Croix de Guerre recipient, Vaughan, discharged in 1919, later became a chemical engineer and businessman while rising to lieutenant colonel and later major general in 1946.
