VA Aids Debt Collection From Veterans and Staff
The Veterans Administration using a computerized system reports $47.5 million collected in fiscal 1980 at 14 cents per dollar, with $26.6 million more in the first seven months of the current year. The agency notes amendments permitting offsets, use of VA attorneys, interest charges, and credit reporting to aid recovery, including a policy barring home loan guarantees for veterans tied to overdue education loans. A computer match last November identified 7,176 VA employees among 66,000 federal workers owing nearly $37 million.
