Hooks Suspended as NAACP Executive Director in St Louis

Four inmates hijack corrections bus near Utica

Four inmates seized a Department of Corrections bus and a guard's handgun on the New York State Thruway east of Utica. One was shot in the arm and hospitalized as the group fled in a stolen car, later ditched near Route 12. The escape occurred at 10 13 a.m. with 22 inmates en route to Auburn. all four were recaptured shortly after noon.

Lewis County man undergoes rare liver transplant in Pittsburgh

A 26 year old Lewis County man, Larry Walker of Lyons Falls, left Presbyterian University Hospital in critical condition after a 14 hour 45 minute liver transplant begun yesterday at 8 30 p.m. He was flown from Upstate Medical Center where acute liver failure was diagnosed. Only about 150 liver transplants have been attempted in the past three years in the United States. Walker was painted work on a water tower in Camillus when exposed to solvent fumes from vinyl paint. Doctors say survival rates for the procedure have improved since 1980 with roughly 60 to 65 percent of adults and 65 to 70 percent of minors living a year after surgery.
