Central New Yorkers, still digging out from 22 inches of snow, face a warming trend that could trigger renewed flooding as heavy snow melts. Meteorologist Andrew P. Keller warned mid 40s temperatures and weekend rain may swell streams and rivers, washing away remaining snow and threatening low-lying areas.
Washington prospects the atom as a near term force in daily life. With cobalt 60 imaging and reactors generating power homes trains ships will run on atomic energy. Radiation bracelets warn workers of near misses and factories may employ safer tech. Concluded on page 10 column 3.
LAS VEGAS reports the Nevada test site detonated a major atomic device at 4 55 PM. The brilliant flash was visible in Las Vegas 75 miles away and more dimly in Los Angeles and San Francisco. Observers noted a brief fireball and a mild pressure rumble, with the cloud flattening atop an icecap. The shot was postponed from March 14 due to weather.
Republican leaders meet with Governor Harriman to work out a compromise on the school aid bill ahead of the 1955 legislative session adjournment. The talks aim to clear the way for final adjournment of the session.
G O P leaders said Harriman might accept a compromise on the school appropriation bill. Legislation could quit Saturday or next Wednesday at the latest as few obstacles remain. Honey says if both houses stay at top speed, we can adjourn. Harriman’s chief objection cites Japan Fire Prevention record safety issue.
The National Assembly convicts impeached President Jose Ramon Guizado as an accessory in the killing of his predecessor Jose Antonio Remon. He receives six years and eight months in prison and disqualification from public office for the term. Verdict came in a secret session by a 45 to 8 vote.
A Swedish engineering delegate said ex-Soviet Premier Georgi Malenkov was sent to Siberia on an inspection tour after being ousted. Sture Exefaik, head of the Swedish power plant board, spent 18 days in the USSR and met Malenkov briefly, who conveyed personal regards and said he could not receive them.
In Washington a Presbyterian pastor defends President Eisenhower amid a Democratic senator's claim that he makes political capital from his church attendance. The Rev Edward L R Elson of the National Presbyterian Church steps to the defense.
The speech by Senator Matthew at the United Automobile Workers convention in Cleveland touched on President Eisenhower and his religious life. Rev. Robert S. Lutz of Denver praised Eisenhower as sincere in faith and avoiding church attendance showmanship. The pastor recounted Eisenhower’s response to announcing church visits and urged authenticity over hypocrisy.

Secretary of State Dulles told the Senate Foreign Relations Committee that top level talks with Russia are months away and a Big Four meeting would only occur after lower level discussions clear the way. He said there is no calendar date for such a conference. He urged that any eventual meeting would require broad agreement on Germany’s unification.
In the House of Commons Prime Minister Churchill said prospects for a four power conference look brighter though heads of government have not agreed to a summit meeting. He dodged a Labor question about attending in person and reiterated his view that a top level meeting could be helpful if led by the summit rather than by leaders themselves.
President Eisenhower does not believe Red China will start a major conflict in the Formosa Straits in the weeks ahead. He rejects estimates of an April attack on Quemoy and Matsu, noting China lacks bases and supplies for an amphibious assault.
Four cars of a 10 car freight train derailed near Colchester Depot crossing blocking the main line to Montreal and St Albans. No injuries reported. Rail crews worked to clear the tracks and restore service.
At least two people were killed and several injured when a transport aircraft collided with a jet trainer during takeoff at Greenfield Air Base. Investigators are assessing the control failure and sequence of events leading to the mishap.
Governor Victor E. Anderson said hunger will pressure the nine rebels holding two guards at the Nebraska State Penitentiary to offer terms soon. He insisted on releasing guards Warren Miller and Eugene Diego before negotiating and noted hostage Gerald Hoffman’s status. The siege entered its third day as authorities seek an end to the crisis.
Leonard Gerthoffer age 55 of Fremont Street was fatally injured when the oil truck backing from a residence ran over him in his driveway. He suffered severe internal injuries and was rushed to St Joseph's Hospital in critical condition. The driver did not see him as he walked behind the vehicle. The incident occurred this afternoon in East Syracuse.
Albany reports indicate Republican leaders and the Senate Finance Committee favor a bill delaying the compulsory auto inspection law until September next year. Governor Harriman requested the postponement to study highway safety implications. The delay follows a push by Senator Fred Rath to revoke the law.
The New York Senate gave final approval to a two cent per gallon gasoline tax hike and a three cent diesel fuel tax increase to fund a 750 million dollar highway bond issue. The measures await governor Harriman's signature and would take effect only if the bond plan is approved in a fall referendum.
