State Thruway Authority backs Syracuse north south expressway
The State Thruway Authority preferred a north-south expressway through Syracuse but said it cannot be self liquidating as a toll facility in the near future. A 38 mile Syracuse to Pulaski section might be the only stretch with that potential. Cost is estimated at 129 221 000. Further field surveys borings and revenue studies are needed to decide the self liquidating status. The report cites a 10 year highway program funded by a 750 million bond issue and President Eisenhower's national program as influential developments.

Gov Victor E Anderson took control at the Nebraska State Penitentiary as eight rebels surrendered after 65 hours. He freed two guards Eugene Swanson and Warren Miller and another prisoner, then negotiated with four convicts who faced 15 days in the hole plus 60 days solitary confinement. The hostages shared a meal with their captors during the standoff.

Pvt. William A. Verdine, a Soviet prisoner for six years, was fined 396 by a military court for being absent without leave. He faced possible six months jail, dishonorable discharge and forfeiture of pay. Cottages toppled into Lake Ontario at Rainbow Shores
Severe winds and record high water level in Lake Ontario destroyed several cottages in the Rainbow Shores area near Pulaski. The first cottage loss was T. P. Dixon of Syracuse on Wednesday night. others owned by Anthony Ruf, Floyd Carpenter, and Walter Lang were demolished over the weekend. About 20 camps line the shore and a 100 foot access road is washed out by debris and ice.

Syracusan Charles S. Bailey 64 of 908 Crawford Ave. died instantly in a Route 13 crash near Elmira when his southbound car swerved to avoid a stopped truck and was hit by a northbound 15 ton truck. Willis E. Nave of Horseheads drove the northbound truck. Bailey worked as a sales representative for Oberdorfer Foundries and Oswere Casting Corp. His body was taken to Mogros Funeral Home El Mira. wife Ellen J. Bailey survives.
