Storm Kills 37 as Blizzard Ravages U S and Canada

A deadly storm ending a prolonged winter left 37 dead and crop losses exceeding 50 million dollars across the United States and Canada. Northwestern states face heavy snow and freezing temperatures while the Midwest and South endure frigid freezes threatening crops and fruit yields. E M Farmer Dies in Sleep in Hunton Fayetteville

E M Farmer known as Buck, chairman of Gould-Farmer Co, died at his Hunton home. Officials say he suffered a heart attack in his sleep. He led civic efforts as former Syracuse Chamber of Commerce president. son Clifford Farmer works with the General Electric distributor.

Hull's Condition Is Still Critical

Washington GP Cordell Hull the 13 year old former Secretary of State, was listed in ethical condition today at Bethesda Naval Hospital. Hull was hospitalized after suffering a stroke Saturday. The latest hospital reports said Hull was conscious. Earlier he had been reported intermittently in a coma.

Two Die After Car Buried in Snow on Quebec Highway

Provincial police investigated a buried car with Vermont plates found on a snow blocked highway near St Etienne de Lauzon. Two of three occupants were reported dead. Laurent Olivier of St Etienne reported finding the car near his family home and alerted a doctor. Snowmobiles were dispatched from St Romuald to the scene.

Drifts to 15 Feet Clamp Central New York Highways

A wind whipped snowstorm hit Central New York closing more than 100 schools and shutting the New York State Thruway for the first time in its history. Drifts up to 15 feet formed barricades on Onondaga County roads as plows struggled against gusty winds. The US Weather Bureau reported 16 to 22 inches of snow in Syracuse since Saturday and warned of continued travel hazards.

The Department of Public Works announced trash collections in Syracuse are suspended today with a one day delay. A DPW spokesman said all pickups will shift by one day and Saturday collections will allow workers to catch up.

Downtown stores normally open Monday nights will close today at 5 30 PM as storm conditions force the Retail Merchants Division to eliminate regular Monday night shopping hours. The Week End storm dumped heavy snow in Syracuse with 4.7 inches today after 37 inches Saturday and 13.4 inches Sunday. Onondaga County deployed 45 plows and 17 sand spreaders at 4 AM to clear roads as drifts 12 to 15 feet blocked streets. City crews ran 24 snowplows and two motor graders in a broad mobilization.

Police aided a car stuck near W Cartle and Remvick Ave at 12 20 AM. Mrs Rothery gave birth at Crouse Irving Hospital to a boy named Ashworth pl.
