Local control of transit for handicapped proposed
Washington AP reports that Transportation Secretary Drew Lewis will push legislation to let local communities decide how to serve the handicapped, a move praised by some in the transit industry as a 180 degree shift from Carter policies but opposed by disability groups. Lewis may also seek to lift off peak half fare requirements for the elderly and handicapped, amid ongoing debates over funding cuts and retrofitting costs for accessible transit.
