Marshalls Seek UN Help for Independence
A five member Marshall Islands delegation led by Anton A deBrum travels to the United Nations Trusteeship Council to press for immediate separation from the Trust Territory of the Pacific and a phased path to independence. The group cites U S plans to lump the Marshalls into a Federated States of Micronesia as a step toward a U S colony. The 25 000 residents on 26 atolls and four islands fear loss of self rule as the islands await the 1981 reorganization.
