Mexican labor lures twin plants
In Ciudad Juarez AMPEX and other firms employ over 100,000 Mexicans in maquiladoras or twin plants. Most workers are young women earning about 1.32 dollars an hour for 48 hours weekly, while US plants pay far more. Critics say jobs shift from the US and fuel illegal immigration, though firms defend the arrangement as cost efficient.
