A 26-year-old deaf mute faces second degree murder charges after the overnight shooting death of James M. Conley 25 in the Smith Street Manlius apartment. Ernest Bellardini is accused of firing a .22 caliber rifle inside the shared residence. The shooting, witnessed by a third roommate Patrick Carroll, occurred around 1 am and Conley was found dead at the scene. Carroll fled to his parents in Salina and later cooperated with authorities through his stepfather George Schmidt. Police investigated the case with Manlius officers joining later.
Interpreters proficient in sign language were required to question James M. Conley, 28, and roommates Ernest Bellardini Jr., 26, and Patrick Carroll, 30, after a shooting death. Bellardini’s interview halted at his attorney's request, as investigators probe living arrangements and possible homicide links in Salina and Manlius.

Witness Oliver Retliff described hearing noises around midnight and a commotion before police woke residents at 4 30 a m. The incident involved a .22 caliber rifle and left a quiet neighborhood shaken by the apparent feuding leading to the fatal shooting.
