Project to save fuel by use of bikes dies
A federal energy conservation program aimed at shifting commuters to bicycles to save oil and fuel costs has been scrapped by the Department of Transportation. The plan, tied to the 1978 act, predicted 2.5 million riders and 23.5 million barrels saved annually by 1985, but DOT shifted priorities and no actions are planned to carry out the program. Bicycle ridership has since grown, with advocates urging continued promotion of biking as energy conservation.
