Gandhi reshuffles Cabinet in revival move

NEW DELHI India Indira Gandhi reshuffled her Cabinet to revive the Congress Party after defeats in state elections. President Zail Singh swore in new ministers at Rashtrapati Bhavan as the eighth shakeup since 1980. Former state chief ministers Vijay Bhaskar Reddy and Viswanath Pratap Singh took oaths as ministers of shipping transport and commerce respectively.

Judge issues warrant for white supremacist over 1958 church bombing

J B Stoner, a white supremacist sentenced to 10 years for the Bethel Baptist Church bombing, missed a midnight deadline to begin serving his term. Circuit Judge Crowder ordered arrest on sight if he did not surrender by midnight. Jefferson County jail officials confirmed he failed to report, amid fears of prison dangers.

Perry Town Hall Fire Destroys Historic Building

Fire officials and 180 firefighters investigated the Perry Town Hall rubble after a blaze leveled the 1898 two story wood and brick building. The fire threatened a nearby department store and supermarket while the town hall housed the supervisor and clerk offices and a theater used by the Wyoming County Arts Council. The structure had been recently named to the National Register of Historic Places.

Parkhurst warns trucker strike is imminent

Washington AP reports Mike Parkhurst president of the Independent Truckers Association warns a strike is imminent over fuel tax and truck fee increases. He says a shutdown scheduled for Monday is unlikely to be averted. Independent truckers, though under 15 percent of trucks, haul 90 percent of fresh food, most household goods, and half of steel.

Storm brings rain to Midwest across wide region

A Pacific coast storm system moved inland bringing rain from Oklahoma and western Arkansas to southern Minnesota and eastern South Dakota. Showers, fog, and freezing drizzle were reported across the central Gulf Coast to the Ohio Valley while northern Minnesota and upper Michigan saw snow. Temperatures ranged from 6 degrees below zero in Houston, Maine to 65 in Brownsville with continued rain and snow forecasts through today.

Reagan plan hikes spending by 43B to trim deficit

The administration unveils a four part budget for 1984 aiming to cut the deficit with a six month COLA freeze and inflation indexed spending, a one year pay and retirement freeze, selective cuts across 600 discretionary programs, structural changes to Medicare Medicaid and civil service, plus a standby tax if deficits persist. The plan seeks $164B in five years in reduced outlays and $146B in standby tax revenue 1986 through 1988, with deficits shrinking to 23 percent of GNP by 1988.
