Final delays not meant to humiliate Carter
Former State Department officials say the three hour hold in the Iran hostage flight was due to Iran’s opposition and not intended to humiliate President Carter. They note the hostages left Iran soon after Reagan’s inauguration, defend the three part Algiers accord, and expect the Undertakings to be released this week. Christopher, Muskie, and Percy urge forward looking hearings and accountability, while stressing no secret deals and a sound financial agreement.

Second Iran hostage rescue plan scrapped as risky
The Washington Post reports that a second joint Chiefs of Staff plan to rescue American hostages in Iran using paratroopers and commandos was scrapped in August due to high risk of killing hostages. A pincer maneuver to seize the Tehran embassy and raids on other sites faced fractured Iran militants and lack of a central command, making execution unlikely. The first attempt, Rice Tron, failed last April when a helicopter shortage halted assembly inside Iran.
