Policeman's Home Damaged by Fire in Syracuse

Deputy Chief Joseph Jewell's South Side home suffered moderate structural damage after a 4 15 p m fire. Fire Investigator Richard Morgan said two teenage boys were seen near the corner smoking before firefighters arrived and fled westward. The blaze appeared to start with a lit piece of paper stuffed into a partition outside the home. Jewell's son Jeff smelled smoke and alerted authorities.

Lincoln First Bank Hit Again In DeWitt Hold-up

A gunman robbed the Lincoln First Bank on North Midler Ave and Court Street Road in DeWitt, demanding 10 000 then 5 000 in cash before fleeing on foot. The suspect wore a green down jacket and possibly fled in a powder blue sedan, with law enforcement agencies pursuing the case. More than 3,000 was taken in a January MONY Plaza branch robbery.

Youths net $120 in knifepoint liquor store holdup

Two teenage boys net about $120 in cash and several bottles of whiskey in a knifepoint holdup at Iwanski's Liquor Store, 1409 Burnet Ave. The operator Ann Iwanski was threatened with a knife during the 3 p.m. incident before the youths grabbed the pocket book and $40, plus $80 from a cash drawer. Officer Robert Brunelle led the initial investigation.

Two South Side men arraigned in Camillus robbery case

Two South Side men, Andrew Cosby 22 and John A. Derby 24, pleaded innocent at arraignment in Camillus Justice Court on attempted robbery charges. They were remanded to the Public Safety Building jail with bail set at 24 for first degree assault criminal possession of a weapon and first degree grand larceny following an attempted holdup at Poorhouse West in Western Lights Plaza Geddes. The incident occurred around 4 am yesterday and they were subdued by Onondaga County Sheriff’s deputies outside the tavern.

Burglary Suspects Arrested in Onondaga County Utah Case

Deputy Paul Stevenson and Sgt. Thomas Lavere arrested Ronald B. Richardson 25 and Dianna B. Richardson 19 at 173 Bishop Ave on suspected ties to at least 60 burglaries in Utah. Police recovered two rifles and a color TV, with extradition to be arranged and pending arraignment next Monday.

State plans upgrading of highways in three-year program

The New York State Transportation Department announced a $152 million plan to upgrade Interstates 81 and 481 and Route 57 over the next three years. The work includes rebuilding I 81 from Hiawatha Boulevard to the Mattidale interchange, completing the I 481 link between Thruway Exit 34A and Bear Road in North Syracuse, and widening Route 57 from Liverpool to Mayers Corners. Phases are set for a three-year bidding schedule, with I 81 work in three phases and I 481 in two phases, detailing specific segments and costs.
