Trash plant hearings seek public input on county waste plan
The county Legislature's Oversight Committee for Resource Recovery will hold two hearings this week at 7:30 p.m. on Rock Cut Road to gather input on a proposed trash fueled steam and electricity plant. The first hearing will discuss creating a Resource Recovery Agency to oversee the project. the second will review the RFP for the steam plant. The plan, backed by County Executive Mulroy, contemplates a private builder operated plant costing over $100 million that would burn about 1,000 tons of trash daily, supply steam to county and city facilities, and generate electricity for Niagara Mohawk. Utilities and tipping fees would fund operations, with ash and nonburnables disposed near Camillus. Some officials fear loss of local control. others question the timetable and landfill redirection. The SWDA may be replaced, and debates include timing, landfills, and potential interim arrangements.
