Divers and rescue teams comb the wreckage of the 810 foot Sansinena after a massive explosion in Los Angeles harbor. At least five killed and around fifty injured as officials warn the death toll may rise for days.
Albany AP reports at least 16 patients in New York state hospitals are treated for Guillain Barré syndrome linked to the swine flu immunization program. Dr Kenneth Pratt notes Albany Medical Center averages 12 to 14 such cases annually, while federal authorities halted the program after reports of this syndrome following vaccination.
Pratt notes many cases arise after recent infections and that winter’s respiratory diseases may raise incidence. Three local patients remain in satisfactory condition with varied timing relative to flu shots. New York City and upstate counts rise, while officials stress no link to swine flu vaccines and rely on public notification for outbreaks.

In Zurich two top political prisoners Vladimir Bukovsky and Luis Corvalan were exchanged. Bukovsky arrived from Moscow for exile and left for London after a quick runway handover with Corvalan who had been held by Chile’s regime since 1973. The swap occurred under U.S. mediation with Swiss police guarding the scene. Corvalan, 60, was to attend Brezhnev’s 70th birthday celebration in Moscow.
