Belge indictment dismissal upheld by state’s high court
The New York Court of Appeals 6 to 1 upheld the dismissal of an indictment against Syracuse attorney Francis R. Belge for failing to notify authorities about a missing unburied body. The case involved Belge’s client, Robert F. Garrow Sr., and the death of 16 year old Alicia Hauck. The court ruled the dismissal was within the “interests of justice” and outside appellate review unless there is an abuse of discretion.

New York Court Upholds Pregnancy Disability Benefits
The New York Court of Appeals rules state Human Rights Law requires pregnancy disability payments for private employers as part of anti sex discrimination. In a 5-2 decision written by Associate Judge Hugh Jones the court rejects that coverage is optional and cites the Disability Benefits Law alongside newer anti discrimination mandates. Court rules against gender based beer purchase ages
The Supreme Court, in a 6 to 2 decision, holds Oklahoma's beer purchase law unconstitutional for setting different ages by gender. Justice Brennan states gender classifications must serve important objectives and be closely tied to those goals, which the Oklahoma law fails to do. Girls may buy 2.2 percent beer at 18, while boys must wait until 21.

Fire wrecks Auburn Moose Club top floor
Auburn fire gutted the top floor of the two story Moose Club early today. Firefighters arrived around 4 45 a m but the blaze had already spread across the upper level. No sprinkler system was reported and by dawn one unit stayed on site to monitor for flare ups.
