Fred Divel and his mother Lois founded the San Clemente Historical Society to awaken the town, preserve its heritage, document legacy buildings, and push preservation programs. Their efforts kept landmarks like Casa Romantica and Miramar Theatre from demolition as San Clemente grew from 13,000 to 65,000 residents since the Nixon era. Divel, a 1967 San Clemente High School graduate, grew up in a family arriving in 1927 after Ole Hanson founded the town. He is survived by Lois Divel, sister Martha Sanchez, and sister Jane Nichols.
