Big Sweep litter cleanup nets thousands of pounds countywide

Statewide Big Sweep organized by First Citizens Bank drew about 9 781 volunteers at 70 percent of sites who collected 152 3 tons of debris weighing 304 642 pounds along North Carolina waterways. Craven Pamlico and Jones counties reported hundreds to thousands of pounds collected with volunteers from creek keepers Neuse River Foundation and East Carolina University marine biology students active at multiple locations.

Coast Guard ends search for missing Navy airmen

The U S Coast Guard called off a 2 5 day Atlantic search for two Navy airmen after their F 14A collided with another jet near Cape Hatteras. Cmdr Kevin Wensing said no wreckage or bodies were found and the missing officers are presumed dead. A memorial service is slated for Oceana Naval Air Station.

Craven legislator named to governor's DWI task force
