Breakthrough halts Haiti invasion with peacekeeper role

Hong Kong's first democratic vote yields mixed gains

The Associated Press reports Hong Kong's Sunday local elections produced strong wins for pro democracy candidates with 106 of 173 seats, while pro China forces led by Democratic Alliance captured 36 of 83. Tsang Yok-sing praised a balanced result as turnout hit a record 33.1 percent of 2.4 million eligible voters ahead of 1997 transition.

Preservation group targets Union Station area for rehab

New Bern Preservation Foundation concentrates on seven two story homes within a three block radius near Union Station. The group seeks city cooperation to restore the depot and adjacent building at its expense with city liability sharing and $100000 in services over five years.

A Council on Competitiveness study released today says the United States has dramatically regained leadership in many critical technologies after years of lag.
