Final Battle for Chattanooga and Missionary Ridge Capture
A Civil War battle narrative by Captain George L. Kilmier covers Grant’s Chattanooga campaign. Delays by Sherman and Hooker due to rivers and rain shift action to November 24, with Geary’s division scaling Missionary Ridge and routing Walthall’s line, paving a decisive flank movement for Union forces.
Sherman’s Chattanooga Breakthrough on Missionary Ridge
Union forces under Grant and Thomas push from Orchard Knob toward Missionary Ridge. Hooker’s assault on Lookout Mountain becomes the famed Battle Above the Clouds as Sherman's crossing at night enables a stealthy advance through mist and rain to seize Lookout and prep a wider Federal advance into Chattanooga.

Chattanooga Ridge Assault Ends Grant's Plan
In a hard fought three day action at Chattanooga Sherman and Hooker failed to take Missionary Ridge as Bragg thwarted their right flank. Sheridan disobeyed orders and pressed uphill with Wood and Johnson, capturing a ridge battery and forcing Confederate collapse. The Union suffered heavy casualties while Bragg repulsed the Federal assault ending the Chattanooga campaign.
