Lincoln’s Early Life in New Salem as A Student and Young Politician
The narrative sketches Abraham Lincoln’s years in New Salem, where he studied law from borrowed texts, wrote deeds and notes for neighbors, and pursued surveying under Calhoun. It highlights his shy, generous nature, friendships with Jack Armstrong and James Short, and his rise as a postmaster and legislator while supporting himself and avoiding personal speculation.
