Hazelton bottomless lake symbolic of lost wreck battle
The Evansville and Terre Haute railroad fights the Hazelton bottomless lake created by the 1897 White River flood. Ground hogs undermined the levee causing the Chicago and Florida flyer disaster. Trains were blocked for weeks as crews fill the lake with dirt, rebuild the levee, and plan further defenses amid costly operations.
