A Terre Haute caterer brought colored waiters to a Linton Elks gathering. The crowd of about 2,000 demanded the men leave with a slogan of peace if possible but force if necessary, and the waiters were escorted out toward the Wabash River. Some in the crowd disapproved but did not intervene.
A Prairie Creek family of Josephus Thomas contracted milk sickness, with his wife and two daughters Nellie and Jarsey seriously affected. The illness, rare in modern times, recalls earlier outbreaks linked to cows eating poisonous vegetation and milk. Several marriage notices follow, listing partners and spouses in local listings.
In Farmersburg Marcellus Forbes 25 shot himself after threats of self harm. Evansville mob violence following a police murder left six dead and twenty two wounded as militia clashed with armed assailants. Marriage reports and several civil actions complete the scene.
Luna Conway age 17 and William Norton age 27 married in Marshall Illinois after a trip planned for Terre Haute. They were accompanied by Mrs Ward Norton’s sister. Norton works as a farm hand and Conway is daughter of William Conway who lives 14 miles west of Sullivan.
Asa W. McKinney secured a divorce from Francis Jane McKinney in circuit court last Wednesday. On Friday he obtained a license to remarry his divorced wife of one day from County Clerk Taylor. Both reside in Curry township.
Clarence Wharton aged sixteen a driver for the Indiana and Chicago company mine at Dugger was killed last Friday when a mass of slate weighing about 3800 tons fell on him in an entry crushing him instantly. He was the son of Charles Wharton the assistant mine boss.
Susan R. Martin wife of Ezra Martin died Saturday at her home after a several year illness. A paraly tic stroke in October hastened decline. She was born in Hardin county Kentucky September 5 1854 and married Ezra in 1874. Two sons Webster and Commodore predeceased her. Funeral services were by Elder David Francis and interment followed in Liberty cemetery with relatives from Terre Haute and Porterville in attendance.
Mr and Mrs Wm Mackay of Farmersburg were seriously injured when their buggy was struck by an E T H coal train backing down to the Star City mines. They were en route to a religious meeting at Jackson Hill and were rescued by train crew, taken to Hyméra for medical care. Mr Mackay a Presbyterian pastor suffered three broken ribs and possible internal injuries. Mrs Mackay had severe but not alarming injuries.
A multi day reunion features Carlisle brass band and Mordecia H. Dixs martial band with six soloists and famed Will Parrott in ragtime acts. Fourteen speakers including Col. Posey Col. McClean Col. Cavins Col. Brant and Col. Crane will lecture. Races and a 24 member flag drill cap the daily events with a July 20 night show in Bass Auditorium.
The Sunday school at Walker's Chapel will host an ice cream supper on Saturday evening August 1 inviting all residents to attend.
County commissioners reject all liquor license applicants in a Wednesday session. Craven Reed Frank Botts Hosea Badders Sullivan Robert Bennett and Dugger are refused licenses. Arcade license expires Thursday and Badders Friday. two Sullivan saloons remain Dudley brothers operate north and south. Anna Hughes returns to Chicago after visiting relatives in town.
