Rise of the Republican movement in Indiana 1854 1860
Indiana delegates pressed Lincoln at the 1860 Chicago convention with a strong push for protectionist planks and anti slavery expansion. The state rallied 50 000 at Indianapolis for Lincoln Hamlin and a republican ticket while Democrats split over Breckinridge and Douglas. Political leaders praised Indiana's decisive role in Lincoln’s nomination and the party’s national rise.
