First person account from Camp Doniphan describes a march to the 128th Field Artillery HQ. Harris details gear carried, sandy conditions, heat, and a two mile trek with 90 degree heat as recruits transfer into Battery C, 128th FA.
A large crowd at the C. and E. depot saw 38 Sullivan boys depart at 8 15 for Camp Taylor Louisville Ky completing the county first draft. The farewell was tearful with relatives and friends present as names of those leaving were read including John Racosky Clarence Beach Samuel Britton Clovis Teach Fred Jordan Ben Andrusic and many others.
The Sullivan lodge of Elks four teen years old burned the mortgage on their North Court street home at a meeting last night. The event left the lodge debt free with a clear title. New officers were installed for the ensuing year: Exalted Ruler Hinkle C. Hays Esteemed Leading Knight C. H. Stratton Esteemed Loyal Knight W. E. Ardelotte Esteemed Lecturing Knight W. T. Leahy Tyler W. T. Mellott Treasurer S. E. Lindley trustee and a lunch was hosted by retiring ruler S. E. Lindless and John W. Lindley.

Nelson Poynter son of Mr and Mrs S P Poynter won a school assembly room competition defeating upperclassmen Harold Osborne and Ira Long. He will represent Sullivan at the district oratorical to be held in Vincennes. His topic was What Shall Be the Policy of the United States in Financing the Present War.
George H. Felthaus assistant state fire marshal spent three days here aiding a state campaign to remove dilapidated buildings and trash. Twenty structures in Sullivan will be ordered razed as he urged businesses and surroundings be kept clean.
Twenty two boys from Sullivan county left for Fort Hamilton New York to report for military duty as the final draft increment. They departed at 8 13 via the C & E I Ry traveling to Fort Hamilton on a B and O S W Ry special. One expected member Jesse Boston received a time extension and will join after Boston closes his school. Names were published in last week's Union.
Police recovered a fine overcoat belonging to Dr Joe R Crowder of this city. The coat was stolen last week from a waiting room at St. Anthony's hospital and found by officers in a pawn shop.
Four Sullivan men and H Huntsman gain possession and title to a 350 acre oil lease in Estille County Kentucky developed with forty producing wells and a daily capacity of 2090 barrels. The court battle with Raydure spanned nearly two years ending with a Cincinnati appeals court ruling.
W T Mellott county food administrator received a telegram from Dr Harry E Barnard federal food commissioner for Indiana urging a strictly wheatless diet until the next harvest. The message cites national urgency and compares the wheat shortage to Gettysburg and the Hindenburg era while appealing to Indiana patriots to comply.
The Red Cross Work Shop at Mr J C Chaney residence on North State Street seeks women volunteers for afternoon shifts. With battlefront supplies running low, swift production is urged as thousands of Indiana women already devote two days weekly. Please give one half day weekly to sustain relief efforts.
The notice explains a May 7 primary and requires all voters to register at county registration sites. Registration centers open April 8 and stay open until twenty nine days before the November election. You cannot vote without registering.
J W Hallett of Haddon township found a penny sized coin with a 1863 date and Indian head on one side. The reverse lists Price Bros Dry Goods Clothing Boots and Shoes Sullivan Ind, a firm that operated during the war era at the Sherman theater corner. Brothers James Edward and George Price were known in Sullivan. two are deceased and Uncle George still lives there.
Petersburg March 30 E R Riggs of Sullivan has leased 700 acres in Pike County paying bonuses from 5 to 50 dollars per acre. Rigs will be moved into the county to begin drilling test wells as soon as rigs are erected on the farms. Indications point to a broad drive to develop the oil territory to its productive limit.
Samuel Goldberg, 36, died at home of his parents on North Section street after a long heart ailment. He ran the family business here since 1900 with his father and was a member of Temple Bnai Abraham. Funeral services were held at the residence, then burial at Highland Lawn cemetery in Terre Haute. Pallbearers included Herbert C. Steel, Julius Harry, Herman Smock, Joe Schroeder, Dave Rogers and Aud Mason. Survived by parents, one sister Ethel, and brothers Julius, Harry, and Milton.
Word arrives that Arnold Getty son of Mr and Mrs A M Getty of this city has landed safely in France returning from service.
A letter from the Adjutant General to John C. Chaney states Sullivan troops stationed at Camp Taylor Kentucky may be allowed to come home for Decoration Day May 30 1918 with travel arranged so they depart the night before and return the next morning noting no expense to the United States and suggesting direct correspondence with the Camp Taylor Commanding General for final arrangements.
Sheriff Haile took Dennis Whitehill to Fort Benjamin Harrison after he was shot during a larceny arrest at Carlisle. Whitehill, a deserter from the army, belonged to Supply Co. 313 at Camp Chillicothe Ohio and had a $50 reward on his capture.

Hunt sixty one veterinary surgeon and Nancy E. Thomson fifty nine of Sullivan and Hymera. Thomas H. Mann twenty and Cecile Patton twenty four of BR. R. A. Sullivan. Oscar Hall thirty eight R. A. cits. engineer and Ruth Berkshire twenty three Merom.
Daniel Pinkston a well known farmer living three miles northeast of the city died Thursday morning from a stroke of paralysis suffered two days earlier. Surviving children are Solon Pinkston Fred Pinkston and Mrs Gertrude Marlow all of near Sullivan and Mrs Mayme Reynolds of Terre Haute.
A Sullivan company owning the 156 acre W. C. Wolfenberger farm sold the tract yesterday to M. W. Asrey of the city for fifteen thousand dollars.
