Colors Worn by Jockeys Through the Ages

The article notes that King Henry VIII dressed jockeys in colors as early as 1530 but confirms no fixed palette. In 1762 the Jockey Club announced owner chosen colors for jockeys, some of which remain in use by the same families today.

Jefferson County Fair Draws Crowd Despite Dry Year

The Jefferson County Fair in Fairbury drew good attendance with cool days. Live stock and grain exhibits were strong and premiums awarded to locals including Phil Dawson of Endicott who won prizes for many entries, notably Ayrshire dairy cattle.

Last Tuesday evening friends and relatives gathered at Rudolf Lampe's home to celebrate his 49th birthday. The assembled guests enjoyed games and cards, then shared refreshments before departing in the early hours, wishing him many more happy birthdays.

Mayor Andrew’s Cow Wins First Honors in Illinois dairy test

J H Andrews mayor of Kewanee Illinois topped 14 000 dairy cows in the Thirtyone Dairy Head Improvement Association test for milk and butterfat production. The Holstein produced over a ton of milk with 91.1 pounds of fat. Andrews is related to J H Andrews of Kewanee Iowa who visited recently.

Mrs Challis Buried at Fairbury

Mrs H B Challis of St Joe died last Friday and was buried at Fairbury last Sunday. She had been in poor health for years. Card of Thanks from Henry W Challis and Mrs Arthur Bower and Mrs Amy B Taylor. Elizabeth Rucker went to St Joe to be with her brother Will Rucker who died Wednesday.
