A Sunday fire destroyed the house near the Jenkins mill once used as a hardware store by Andy Stevenson. Howard Crane occupied the building and saved little. a barn and hen also perished. Wind hindered efforts to control the blaze. No insurance coverage. origin undetermined. The structure dated from about 1870.
County board approved a warrant to satisfy a district court judgment in favor of former sheriff Jas Chirnside. The amount totaled 1264.45 dollars with 90 percent interest and 35.55 dollars costs. Chirnside had claimed about 1900 dollars for jailor fees accrued over several years, but the claim was not allowed.
The board refused the request, leading to a suit brought in Fairbury where Judge Pemberton delivered judgment. Both the county attorney and Chirnside's attorney threatened to appeal to the supreme court but appeared to abandon further action.
The M E Church announces Sunday School at 10 a m and preaching on alternate Sundays at 11 a m and 7 30 p m. Prayer meeting is each Thursday at 7 30 p m. The W F M S meets with Mrs Viette next week, Ladies Aid at the parsonage, Junior League topic The Worth of the Bible Psalms 119 71 72, Epworth League topic Abstinence the Glory of Mankind Dan 1 8 16 1 Pet 2 11 12. A large audience attended last Sunday's morning service.
Dr Welch remains very ill with critical condition. Frank Naylor visited Fairbury Saturday. Hollenberg starts new cement walks. Fred Backeberg traveled to Hanover Monday. Packer visited kin at home.
Mrs. Fred Weber of Fairbury hosted relatives over Sunday. Mrs. Mary Miller and her daughter left Wednesday for Washington for a few days. Claude Gillett returned from Washington where he had been attending school. Local boys played ball in Fairbury last Saturday and lost an eleven inning game 9 to 10.
On Wednesday May 27 in the Mary Etta hotel parlor Fairbury County Judge Boyle united Stephen Schumacher of Marysville Kansas and Nannie Rucker of Steele City. The ceremony drew a small gathering of relatives. The bride, raised in Steele City, taught in country schools and Steele City high school. the groom is a well regarded newcomer. They plan to reside in Marysville after June 15 and visit Lincoln and Omaha before returning home.
Last Monday a meeting in Dr. Taylors office organized a Good Roads Club with a temporary chairman and secretary. A second meeting was planned to perfect the organization and start action. Members aimed to improve roads contiguously around Steele City by maintaining bridges and culverts and filling ruts. On Wednesday volunteers worked between here and Endicott, using picks and shovels to repair the road and washouts.
An incident at the depot where a boy threw cinders at a moving engine injured the engineer who needed a doctor after reaching Hanover. City ordinances prohibit boarding moving trains, loitering at the depot, and impose fines of one dollar with jail time for repeat offenses. the marshal is authorized to enforce.
