Mrs Haze Garrett and friends gathered Thursday evening January 27 to celebrate her birthday and the tenth wedding anniversary of Mr and Mrs Chester Pearson. A three course lunch was served at the Garrett home marking the occasion.
A clipped notice states Harry Alien is listed on the telek list this week due to illness. The brief item notes flu symptoms and ongoing status.
Local items report visits and illnesses in Fairbury Nebraska including Vera Staley visiting Hanover relatives and Mrs. Chester Pearson ill with flu. Other short notes mention Dr. J. S. Last Sunday night the Steele City Presbyterian Church delighted attendees with pastor W W Preutz. Next Sunday morning Rev W B Worrell will preach. The Woman's Missionary Society will meet at the home of Mrs. F. W. Lowe on Tuesday February 9 at 2 30 pm. All members are urged to attend as the fourth chapter of the study will be resumed by Mrs. Kendall.
At the 5 ae Declamatory last Friday evening rewards were given to Steele City students. First prize in Dramatic went to Chas Lowe for The Cristus. Lucile Taylor earned third in Dramatic with The Highwayman by Neves. Edna James took second in Oratorical for The Unknown Soldier.
The Steele City town team was to play Alexandria Thursday but Endicott substituted, with Endicott 22 Steele City 6. Training night Friday saw the high school teams play Hubbell boys and Hubbell girls, yielding two wins and one loss for the home squad.
A Saturday night program featured the moving picture Wild Justice and a trio of contests that delighted the crowd. Laughing, chicken calling, and hog calling contests drew wide participation, with Rupert Hughes, R T Garret, and John Franklin placing in the hog event. The hall’s full house signals strong local interest and hints at more such entertainment to come.
Kensington group met at Mrs Ruth Muffets home Jan 25 for an afternoon of farm women tips. Mrs Wm Woods was elected president and Mrs H Ahrends assistant secretary. Next meeting with Mrs Barrett Feb 8. Farewell party planned for Mrs Otto Brennies. Bring a covered dish and sandwiches for own family.
Prof M H Swenk Nebraska University entomologist lectures tonight at the lodge hall on chinch bugs. He will show the insect life cycle with lantern slides and discuss farm pest control. Last year chinch bug damage was noticeable in this locality.
Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Rodgers of Endicott visited the H. Fahrenwald home Sunday. Mrs. J. A. Wallace left for Madrid Nebraska to visit daughter Mrs. P J Clark, with Mr. Wallace accompanying to Hastings. Mr. and Mrs. Dave Keef from Sterling visited daughter and family for a few days before returning home.
Sunday visitors at the Gen Graff residence included Mr and Mrs John Swartz and daughter from Home City Kansas Mr and Mrs Henry Zeibig Mrs John Goes and Woodrow Swoboda also attended with Mr and Mrs Johnson, all listed in the social notes.
