City pool closed as repairs start in Stamford

Editorial notes Stamford City Council halted opening of the city pool after a tour found it unsanitary and unsafe. Filtration, cracked floors, sinking edges, and a detached bathhouse wall demand a major renovation funded by HUD, delaying summer swims and offering lake swimming with no lifeguards as a temporary alternative.

Budget, bilingual education, redfish ban in Texas highlights

Texas Senate approved a 1982 43 appropriations package totaling 266 billion, 191 million above current estimates, narrowly defeating a across the board cut proposed by Sen Bill Meier. The House bill totals 26.55 billion for two years and a conference committee will reconcile differences. Senate Education Committee backed Senate Bill 477 to mandate bilingual education through grade six with 18 million for implementation and 150 per student in state funds plus 465 million in the existing budget. Rasphol would exempt gasohol from the 5 cent state gas tax for five years, then phase the tax back in to 1991. The redfish bill passed in the Senate with a two year ban on commercial fishing, while an amendment to include sport fishermen failed. Redistricting plans were released by both chambers, with patman concerned over his district. A Senate hearing is scheduled for Saturday.
