Local resident leaves for pageant Monday
Veronica Newell Miss Jones County, daughter of Mrs Mary Newell of Stamford, will represent Jones County in the Miss Texas U S A Pageant in El Paso August 21. She departs August 13 for a week of activities with about 80 contestants attending dog races in Mexico, chamber of commerce events, press and autograph parties, swims, banquets, amphitheatre visits, and a Miss Universe reception Friday with reigning Miss Universe and Miss U S A. The pageant schedule includes a Saturday preliminary, Sunday interviews, and Monday final telecast. Christi Harris notes this is the largest state pageant. Newell, 23, is a Stamford High School graduate with several local sponsors listed.

Ex New Hope Residents Meet in Stamford
Ex New Hope residents gather in Stamford for a large homecoming at the Lions Building delayed by heavy rain. The meeting kept officers and committees for the next year and approved next year’s homecoming at the Lions Building. bank funds moved to Federal Savings and Loan. Attendees included former teachers and many exes with about 270 in attendance over the weekend. Flooding from seven to seventeen inches of rain affected Lake Stamford area, washing out roads and damaging lakefront cabins and homes.

Area couple killed from asphyxiation
A Stam ford Anson area couple, Lee Watts 87 and Annie Watts 91, were found dead in their home after a suspected butane leak caused fumes while they slept. Lee Watts died at the scene. Annie Watts died after being admitted to Anson General Hospital. Authorities, including Anson Justice of the Peace Terry Spraberry and Sheriff Woodrow Simmons' office, continued to investigate with no ruling on the deaths as of Tuesday night. Services were held at 10 a.m. Wednesday.

Three Stamford High School students Tammy Osment Glenda McCandless and Pam McLemore attended the 19th annual Southwest Twirling Camp at Cisco Junior College June 4 to 9 1978.
