Lake flood devastates Stamford Lake homes and marina

Lake residents report extensive damage from tropical storm Amelia rainfall near Stamford Lake. Families such as the Bells, Weems, Carltons and Carltons suffer total losses or near total destruction. the Moritz and Wright properties are heavily damaged as water reaches patios and interiors. One resident recalls swimming from a submerged home as water moccasins approached. The Bells recount a grand piano lost and a four year old home, built above spillway, declared a total loss. Residents Aid Flood Victims Near Stamford and Lake Stamford

Stamford area residents may donate to a flood relief program started by the Stamford Rotary Club Exchange Club Lions Club and Chamber of Commerce. Perishable food furniture clothing and utensils are requested with a stock trailer for deposits daily from 8 30 a m to sundown at the square. A relief fund is at First National Bank Stamford with checks payable to the Salvation Army or American Red Cross. The Chamber of Commerce office acts as gathering point and information center. Distribution will be through the Red Cross and local chambers.

Record Rains Trigger Historic Runoff Across Stamford Area

Heavy rains drenched the Stamford region last week, with double digits across the area and lake levels surging past the spillway. Observers reported 9.66 inches at Stamford, while outlying gauges in Lake Stamford, Paint Creek, Lueders, and surrounding towns recorded 13 to 20 inches, swelling creeks and flooding fields as Lake Stamford rose more than three feet above the spillway by Friday morning.

Stamford High Band Starts Summer Practice Sessions

The Stamford High School Band will begin summer practice on Monday August 14 at 7 p.m. in the band hall. New music for the football season includes Gonna Fly Now, Short People, The Love Boat, and Disco Inferno. Uniforms will be distributed to seniors and juniors August 24 and 25, with sophomores and freshmen receiving theirs August 30. Band director Alvin Young says halftime shows will feature bold, new maneuvers not seen in the region.

Bulldogs Take Third Place In Port Lavaca Tournament

The Stamford Bulldogs finished third in the state junior tournament at Port Lavaca after a 4 game run that included a win, a loss, then two more wins before elimination. The event was pushed three days due to Hurricane Amelia with rains delaying play and flooding Stamford areas.

Local man charged in wife's death here

A 43-year-old Stamford man, Donald Ray Caffey, was released on a reduced $10,000 bond after arrest on murder charges tied to his wife Juanita’s fatal shooting in the parking lot of Stamford Country Club on July 12. Authorities cited autopsy results and statements from the scene as basis for the charges.

Stamford Chamber Ballots Due August Fifteenth

Stamford Chamber of Commerce reminds members ballots for new directors are due in the Chamber office by Aug. 15. Eight nominees are listed including Don Welch Nancy Russell Joe Smith Upshaw Jerry Terrell Wayland Fuqua Eddie Wilson Gary Mathis and Carl Cooper. Five of the eight will be elected for three year terms. Members needing a ballot should contact the Chamber office.
