Peace Tree Destruction Near Grant Memorial Sparks Debate

Washington October 4 The Crit tenden peace tree which stood for over forty years in the botanical garden will be cut down tomorrow to make way for a foundation for the Grant Memorial statue. William R Smith superintendent protests to War Department urging the foundation be moved ten feet westward to spare the trees. The Beck tree planted by Senator James Beck in 1876 will also be removed. A Pittsburgh Dispatch report describes a novel fast market delivery idea for farmers. An automatic system would transport butter, eggs, greens and more in baskets through light rails at 20 to 25 mph from the farmer’s gate to a central office and then to the market. A single operator could run at least twelve units, with carrier rails depositing mail and merchandise at stations, and a telephone order system linked to a central office.
