Negro's Perilous Ride Through the Clouds at LaRue County Fair

The LaRue County Herald recounts a dramatic incident during a fair balloon ascent. Squire Thurman, a Black helper, became entangled in ropes as the balloon lifted, hanging head downward with feet attached. He held on as the aeronaut urged him to stay calm while spectators marveled at his reflexes. Both landed safely with praise and thanksgiving, and Squire later kept his distance from the balloon area.

Largest Girl in the World Becomes Local Celebrity

Metre Wilhoit aged fourteen, claimed as the world’s largest girl for her age, visited Lebanon with her parents J E and Mrs Wilhoit. Weighing 425 pounds in Lebanon, she reported better health, growth and appetite since childhood, and recalled posing at fairs in Kentucky and Indiana. The family, from Louisville via Springfield, plans to attend fairs in Kentucky and Indiana, with Metre drawing attention wherever she travels.

Bull mauls ex policeman as Harrodsburg man plans mercy for beast

Last Monday morning Squire Reb Goddard's Jersey bull charged ex policeman William Russell who was passing Highland Addition. Russell grabbed the bull's nostril and struck it with a stone and eye blows until the animal retreated to the timber. The vicious bull, already dehorned, will have its sight permanently destroyed by the owner to ensure public safety without harming the animal.

Hardesty and area residents attend family visits

Mr. Russell Hardesty spent Sunday with his aunt Mrs. W H Yaney of Midway. Mrs. Mattie Bishop and Miss Mattie Lee Strange have returned to Blandinsville Illinois after visiting relatives. Mrs. J H Gray and daughter Olivé hosted visitors including Mrs. Gray’s family. Various other locals including Lydia Virgin Bessie Drury Tagie Goodlett Clyde Goatley and Maud Sales were seen visiting or visiting relatives, with Ollie among attendees at Mrs Virgin’s surprise birthday.

Knights of Columbus plans Lebanon council installation

Lebanon Enterprise reports a Knights of Columbus council to be installed in October with Deputy Grand Knight Conover of Paducah guiding forty charter members from Louisville. The ceremony includes a Knighthood degree class of five, a banquet for visiting Knights, and plans for a large, active council to occupy a Main and Market streets address long used by Marion Commandery.

Protracted Meeting at Tatham Springs Ends with Fifteen Additions

The protracted meeting at Tatham Springs closed Sunday with fifteen additions and one restoration. Our pastor was assisted by Rev Geo Law of Louisville who preached powerfully. Several locals visited or traveled through town, including Mr Ivan Keeling at Mt Zion and Mrs W R Wells of Frankfort. The hotel has closed for the season.

Battle Community Notes and Early Fall Travel Plans

Miss Willie Ruby visited her uncle George Young Monday and Tuesday as community members plan to travel to Illinois this fall. Property sales included John Rutherford to James Derringer for 300 dollars and Frye Hooper to Arch Hooper and George Young for an unknown price. A mule accident injured Mrs. James Divine but she is recovering. Local land prices remain high with several land trades noted, and the town reports two stores a blacksmith shop church and school. State Fair attendees from the area are listed and a large Sunday audience heard Rev Simms. A hotel dining room meal mix up led to a humorous five-dish oatmeal breakfast scene narrated by a Chicago paper.
