Betsy Choquette 79 Dies in Winnipeg Beausejour Church

Mrs Betsy Choquette aged 79 died at Grace Hospital Winnipeg on March 1. Born in Scotland she came to Canada over 60 years ago. Survived by husband Joseph and daughter Mrs Nellie Wilding of Red Lake Ontario and five sons. Funeral at St Marys Beausejour March 4 with Fr Joseph Gurka officiating. Burial Beausejour Cemetery. Russell's funeral home in charge.

Gordon W. Mullin aged 25 died March 5 at his parents Beausejour home after a lengthy illness. Born in Winnipeg he lived on the family farm west of Beausejour then moved to town. Beausjour W I Supports Drives

The Beausejour Women's Institute held its March meeting at the hotel led by president Mrs M Stephaniuk. It voted a 50 dollar donation to the Canadian Red Cross appeal and another 50 dollar gift for Save the Children. Members donated clothing for the European family adopted by the institute and will bring canned meat next month. A program by the National Film board featured A Day With Baby and other topics, followed by lunch.

Showboat Gala Carnival Dazzles Pine Falls Community

The Pine Falls Winter Club presented Showboat a lively carnival with skating acts led by Al Jolson and Queen Evelyn Randall. Performances featured Misses May Miller and Pat Pasaluko, clowns, clackwork skaters, and a royal sleigh finale as the audience enjoyed a festive program with song and dance throughout.

War Memorial Committee Plans Legion Rooms

A War Memorial Committee meeting on February 25 discusses provisions for Legion club rooms in the rink building. Members present include A Larson, F H Ehinger, O Russell, L J Pulfer, Mrs F Hayes, R A Hayes, J J Ridley, E A Kielback, Mrs M Stepaniuk, P Rumak, F Rumak, and J Beilan. J D Ridley notes 160 units in the cement project. O Russell says Memorial Fund will gain from carnival proceeds. Forestry Service permit for materials secured. Additional build fund appointees are Mrs M Stepaniuk, F H Ehinger, F Rumak, E Kielback, L J Pulfer. March 4 balance on hand at bank is 5467.87.

Visiting Curlers Guests Of Beausejour Rinks

C W Shields of B A Oil hosted visiting curlers at Beausejour rink clubrooms after an evening of play on March 4. The Beausejour team defeated the visitors on ice but they regrouped to bowl games and improve their showing. Refreshments followed with guests including former resident Alex Waddell of Portage la Prairie and new acquaintances from Brandon Winnipeg Whitemouth and Beau sejour.

Beausejour veteran George Stebbe starts his own business as the Martin Seynor paints agent. He offers home visits with samples and material advice, measures needed quantities, and directs clients to Beausejour Dry Cleaners for addresses. Beausejour Wins 1942 Nor East Hockey League

Lac du Bonnet finished top with 15 points, Beausejour had 12. In playoffs Lac du Bonnet beat Great Falls while Beausejour defeated Seven Sisters. The final series ended with Beausejour winning three straight to claim the league championship for 1942.

Lac du Bonnet Ice Carnival Ends With 6-4 Hockey Win

Lac du Bonnet hosts an ice carnival weekend climaxed by Seven Sisters Falls losing to Lac du Bonnet 6 to 4 in exhibition hockey. The carnival committee thanks Seven Sisters players, Miss Lila Jo Gattes, Miss Shirley Ann Ramshaw, Vic Rowe, John Hammerstedt, Mervin Zikman, Jack Wade, Marcel Bonneau, Westons Ltd, Stewart Bus Lines, Ken R McCuaig, and local volunteers for overall effort and hospitality.

Barley Contest Renewed for 1948 Across Provinces

National Barley Contest rules for 1948 are being prepared by the contest committee led by T. J. Harrison after consultations with Manitoba Saskatchewan and Alberta. There will be two parallel contests in 1948 one for carload shipped barley with inter provincial prizes and another for registered seed barley growers run separately by each province. It remains to be decided if carload entries will be used in both contests.

Lac du Bonnet council approves rest room support and 1948 rate

Lac du Bonnet council meeting on March 2 granted 100 to assist rest room operation with a refund pro rata if closed by December 31. A 55 mill municipal tax rate for 1948 was set. Weed inspectors were appointed and multiple accounts approved for payment.

Regional Prizes Cut in War Time Shipping Contests

The plan reduces regional prizes in commercial shipments. Previously each western province was split into four regions with ten cash awards per region, yielding forty regional winners. Four provincial winners will be selected from those regional winners.

Gravel Haul Ends at Great Falls Dam Project

The Great Falls gravel haul completed March 1 moved 60 000 yards at about 17 000 yards daily. Forty three trucks used a 12 mile ice road from gravel pit to dump, taking one hour per trip, with four tractors at pit and dump spreading gravel. The two year project required 125 000 yards to seal gaps upstream of the dam. Geo. Hill was contractor. two minor injuries occurred amid roughly 200 000 tons moved.
