Message to Nez Perce on Needing Mediation at Missouri Falls
June 4 1806 Lewis reported that Nez Perce chiefs gave no positive answer to a request for two or three of their young men to accompany him to the falls of the Missouri. The aim was to wait for his return from Maria's River and seek peace with Minnetares from Fort de Prairie. If peace was not achieved the youths would inform their people and keep guard until whites could provide relief.
