The Silsbee Bee responds to anonymous letters disparaging the town as a dying city. The editorial lauds Silsbee’s growth, infrastructure, and services, noting higher 1957 business activity, bank deposits, post office receipts, and school enrollment. It admits meters irritate but argues they fund police and traffic control and expresses pride in the community and its citizens.
Silsbee junior high eighth and ninth graders posted two wins this week over Victor and Groves. Ninth graders defeated Groves 40 to 28 and eighth graders won 36 to 24. Earlier they beat Victor 36 to 16 in ninth grade and 16 to 12 in eighth grade. Richard Ratliff injured a broken thumb Monday night.
City council studies a proposed dog running at large ordinance setting annual licenses for licensed vaccinated dogs. A dog trailer and city pound are prepared with 1 dollar daily fees plus vet costs. tagged dogs may run free. Violations carry fines up to 100 dollars. Impounded dogs without tags kept 72 hours. with tags 120 hours before destruction if unclaimed. Licenses renewed yearly. vets to be assigned for rabies vaccines at announced times.
Vernon Gray, a 1957 Silsbee high school graduate, designed the insignia above the main gate at San Diego Naval Station No. 6. A former mechanical drawing student, he studied at the base pattern making school after enlisting in July 1957.
The Texas Highway Commission authorized repair work on relief bridges near the Neches River bridge on Highway 96 toward Evadale. Stringers under the bridges will be strengthened and replaced, says Lester Landgraf the resident engineer for Silsbee.
Silsbee marks the finalPolio and March of Dimes drive event Friday. The drive total reached 2453.67 dollars as Nu Upsilon and Rho Upsilon Beta Sigma Phi chapters along with the Silsbee Womens Club and Exquisedt Club organize the effort under local leaders. The fire siren will signal 7 p.m. start and residents are asked to light porch lamps to invite donations. Mayor Jones proclaimed Friday as Mothers March day.
The Silsbee Chamber of Commerce elected five new directors this week. Clarence De Hart A E Johnson E M Simmons D D Shine and Mrs Robbie Jones will assume office this spring.
About 150 Blue Birds Camp Fire Girls and mothers attended a talent party at Cravens Hall First Methodist Church to benefit the March of Dimes. Horizon Girls did not perform but donated $10 toward the $31.45 total collected, turned in by Mrs. Dorothy Jones in charge of local events.
An industrial accident in Port Arthur killed four men and injured 11. Among the dead were Douglas Jeffcoat of Silsbee Edwin Lester and a Mr Gengrus. all were Kellogg Construction employees working on towers at the Texas Company refinery when scaffolding fell or gave way.
Patricia Register is to be installed as worthy advisor of the Rainbow for Girls at 7 30 p m Friday in the Masonic Temple with Mrs Elaine Register as installing officer and A L Register giving the welcoming address. Other officers and advisory board members are named along with new officers for Silsbee Assembly L T and Becca Ann Clark as mother advisor.
Mr and Mrs W T Arrington were summoned to DeRidder Louisiana last week after the sudden death of D S Johnson the brother in law of the couple. He died from a heart attack.
Gulf Refining Company and West Texas Gulf Pipeline, Hardin County's major taxpayers, filed in 88th district court at Kountze for a temporary injunction to stop county tax collection for 1957. Judge H. A. Coe set hearings for March 11 and 12.
Mrs Sim Ward president invites all members to a DeMolay Mothers Club meeting at 7 30 p m in the home of Mrs B A Rucker Thursday night.
Silsbee High School Band members sponsor a chicken spaghetti supper on Monday February 3 from 5 30 to 8 p m in the high school cafeteria. Tickets are sold by band students and proceeds help fund a May trip to Oklahoma.
The Jasper County Unit of the Texas State Teachers Association held its second dinner meeting of the year on January 27 at the Evadale school. Paul Kantz, director of Administrative Services at the Texas Educational Agency, spoke on the Hale-Aiken Study of the Texas Public Schools, introduced by Ed Nash. Leon Rose led the business meeting.
Only one case heard in County court last week. Andrew C. Starnes pleaded guilty to driving while intoxicated and was fined $50 plus costs and sentenced to three days in jail on January 25. Sixteen persons were arrested and jailed that week, including one child desertion and multiple DWI and burglary cases.
Silsbee Garden Club met Tuesday at the Blue Bonnet Cafe with hostesses Mrs Kate Blackwell and Mrs J D Moore. President Mrs C E Richmond presided as officers elected include Mrs D Moore president and several vice presidents with treasurer and secretary named. The program on house plants was given by Mrs C B Davenport and Mrs Earl Stover. The next meeting is set for February 11 at the home of Mrs H T Horka with co host Mrs T E Schley.
The Nu Upsilon Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi met at 7 30 p m Monday in Mrs Lois Day's home. They approved a 25 donation to the National Endowment Fund supporting cancer and cystic fibrosis research and Girls Town USA. Final plans were made for the March of Dimes Mothers March on Friday night January 31 and for the annual Spring Style Show featuring Jacques Dress Shop and Junior Fashions on Friday February 7 at 7 30 p m in the high school auditorium. Sherman Warner was guest speaker. Refreshments were prepared by Mrs Lois Day and Mrs Rose McGallion.
Funeral services for John Marion Drake 67 of 935 North 4th were held at Mount Olivet Baptist Church. He was killed 6 02 Tuesday morning crossing North 5th Street on his way to Silsbee High School where he worked as custodian. The pickup driver J O Hicks of Silsbee said he could not stop. Justice of the Peace Louis Sellers ruled accidental death. Drake leaves a widow daughters sons and many grandchildren. Burial at Frank's Branch cemetery conducted by Farmer Funeral Home.
The Silsbee Tigers lost two district games last week and again this week. Port Neches won 33 31 in a sudden death overtime after a 27 27 tie and 31 31 in the first overtime. Victor beat Silsbee 57 44 in A and 49 48 in B. They host Port Arthur tonight and Nederland next Tuesday, then face French at Beaumont next Friday.
Funeral services for Samuel William Larkin 71 who died at his home in Silsbee at 1230 am January 25 were held at All Souls Catholic church with Rev Paul Fee presiding. He lived in Silsbee six years was a retired Missouri Pacific mechanic and WWI veteran. Survived by wife, eight children, 15 grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. burial in Resthaven.
Hardin County landowners face about 1.50 per acre for the most effective fire ant eradication program. The total eradication cost runs roughly 30 per acre with government agencies paying half and landowners the other half. John C. White and USDA officials discussed the plan during a Kountze meeting. The campaign begins on Fralise Farms a 2500 acre block near Sour Lake owned by Frank H. Carpenter, county committee chair.
Hardin county commissioners approve an industrial rate plan with Blue Cross Blue Shield offering hospitalization coverage to county workers. Eligible employees must meet 75 percent staffing threshold while the county covers half the premium. dependents available at extra cost. The Nu Upsilon and Rho Upsilon chapters present a spring style show on February 7 at 7 30 p m in the high school auditorium. Local people model fashions from Jacque's Shop and Junior Fashions with local talent providing entertainment and door prizes.
R. FE Alseben underwent surgery Friday at the Veterans Hospital in Houston.
The First Methodist Church primary department holds weekly sessions on Japan sponsored by the Women’s Society of Christian Service. Children wear native costumes and share articles. this week’s topic was A Visit to a Village Church in Japan. Plans to dramatize stories are in progress.
The Silsbee Independent School District nears final completion of its annual school census. Deputy Bill Sellers says nearly all school-age children are counted, but a few six-year-olds entering school next year may be missed. Parents of uncounted children should call 52702.
